Minnesota Brownfields intends to accomplish its mission through the following programs:
Research Program
This program will identify and track brownfield initiatives and programs that have been proposed, adopted, and implemented by local, regional, state and federal government, including pending legislation. This program will also identify and track brownfield initiatives and programs that have been considered or put in place by non-profit and for-profit, non-governmental organizations. In addition, this program will seek to establish a system of monitoring the interests and needs of other organizations involved in promoting brownfield redevelopment.
Education and Public Policy Program
This program will involve organizing and hosting meetings to share information and workshops aimed at providing the practical information and skills required to understand and manage key aspects of brownfield redevelopment projects (funding administration, regulatory interaction, community involvement, etc.). This program will partner, when appropriate, with other environmental and land use-related educational forums and/or technical assistance venues to provide expertise on the role of brownfields in land planning and property redevelopment.
Project Involvement Program
This program will look for opportunities to work with both private and public-sector organizations in a collaborative approach to redevelop brownfields that pose particular challenges. This program will give a priority to projects that lead to private ownership of the property and that are compatible with the identified needs of the community. This may, at times, lead to Minnesota Brownfields taking title to property to help facilitate the real estate transaction or help improve the chances that the redevelopment project can be completed. As a 501(c) (3) organization, Minnesota Brownfields qualifies as an eligible recipient of government funding to conduct environmental assessments and cleanup actions. As a result, when appropriate, Minnesota Brownfields may apply for available funds (e.g., targeted brownfield assessments funds, brownfield cleanup grants and revolving loan funds) to be applied to a redevelopment project.
